پیشداوری چیست؟
علمای اجتماعی، پیشداوری را به شیوه های مختلفی تعریف کردند:در اصطلاح، پیشداوری هم می تواند مثبت باشد و هم منفی . من می توانم عليه یا له هنرمندان جدید، پیشداوری داشته باشم. این بدین معناست که من پیش از اینکه به سام اسمیرا (که شنیده ام از هنرمندان جدید است معرفی شوم گرایش دارم که او را دوست بدارم، یا از او بدم بیاید، و انتظار دارم خصوصیات ویژه ای را در او مشاهده کنم بنابراين، اگر من مفهوم ((هنرمند جدید)) را با رفتار زنانه و ملایم مرتبط فرض کنم، خیلی متعجب خواهم شد اگر سام اسمیر، مانند یکی از بازیکنان مشهور فوتبال، با تكبر و تفرعن از در وارد شود. اگر ((مفهوم هنرمند جدید )) را با انتهای طیف سیاسی افراطی مرتبط بدانم، خیلی متعجب خواهم شد اگر سام اسمیر یک سنجاق سینه ویژه سیاستگذاران محافظه کار را بر سینه خود نصب کرده باشد. در اینجا پیشداوری هایی که ((موافق مردم )) هستند، مورد بحث قرار نمی گیرند؛ در نتیجه، تعریفی از پیشداوری که اختیار می کنیم، به نگرش های منفی محدود خواهد بود. پیشداوری را نگرشی منفی و خصمانه نسبت به گروهی مشخص، بر اساس تعمیم های ناشی از اطلاعات نارسایا نادرست تعریف می کنیم. مثلا وقتی می گوییم که شخصی علیه سیاهپوستان تعصب و پیشداوری دارد. مقصود ما این است که وی به ابراز رفتارهای خصمانه نسبت به سیاه پوستان گرایش دارد و احساس می کند که به استثنای یکی دو مورد، همه سیاهپوستان مانند هم هستند. خصوصیاتی که به سیاهپوستان نسبت میدهد، یا کاملا نادرست و غیردقیقند، یا در نهایت، مبتنی بر اندکی حقیقت هستند که با حرارت به تمامی آنان نسبت داده میشوند.
گوردن الپورت در کتاب کلاسیک خود ماهیت پیشداوری، مکالمه زیر را گزارش می دهد:
اقای الف: بدی یهودیان این است که فقط به فکر خودشان هستند.
اقای ب:اما سوابق انجمن پیکار برای معاینه قفسه سینه نشان میدهد که یهودیان به نسبت تعداد خود سخاوتمندانه تراز غیر یهودیان به موسسات خیریه جامعه کمک کرده اند.

آقای ب : اما یک مطالعه جدید نشان می دهد که درصد یهودیانی که در مشاغل بانکی کار می کنند چندان قابل توجه نیست و خیلی کمتر از درصد غیر یهودیان است . آقای الف: درست است، آنها دنبال مشاغل آبرومند نیستند و فقط در کارهای فیلم سازی و باشگاه های شبانه فعالیت می کنند.
