برای پیشگیری از کودک آزاری جنسی، کودکان مسئول نیستند، بلکه این بزرگسالان هستند که مسئولند. اگر کودکان بتوانند از خودشان مراقبت کنند بسیار آرمانی است اما آنها توانایی لازم را برای مقابله با بزرگسالانی که می خواهند از آنها سوء استفاده کنند ندارند. توانایی هایی از قبیل : قدرت بدنی یا توانایی مذاکره و استدلال.یکی دیگر از دشواری هایی که کودکان در دفاع از خود دارند این است که ما به کودکان خود می آموزیم از بزرگترها اطاعت کنند در نتیجه اطاعت از آزارگر را نوعی اجرای آموزش های والدین می دانند.
همچنین کودکان ممکن است تمایلی به افشای سواستفاده نداشته باشند زیرا می ترسند خودشان مسبب سوء استفاده شناخته شوند و یا به خاطر رفتار بدشان شایسته آزار شمرده شوند. کودکان نیاز به کمک و حمایت دارند تا بفهمند که آنها هیچ کار بدی نکرده اند و آزار جنسی تقصير آنها نبوده است.
سؤال هایی مثل « چرا نگفتی که …؟ » یا « چرا … نکردی؟ » به کودک شما چنین القاء می کند که او به نحوی در وقوع حادثه و سوء استفاده مسئول بوده است. اگر چه بسیاری از سوالها، طبیعی و قابل درک هستند اما به نوعی کارکرد سرزنش و محکوم کردن کودک را می یابند در حالی که در این موقعیت شما می خواهید به فرزند خود کمک کنید نه این که او را سرزنش کنید.به خاطر داشته باشید که ممکن است کودک شما گفته باشد ” نه” ولی فرد آزاردهنده گوش نکرده باشد یا ممکن است به فرزند شما گفته باشد که ” تو از این کار خوشت خواهد آمد” و یا ” تو قبلا هم از این کارها کرده ای حالا نمیتوانی قبول کنی” و بدین وسیله او را تحت کنترل قرار داده و مطیع کرده باشد.
باورهای رایج در مورد کودک آزاری جنسی
باور: کودک آزاری جنسی پدیده ای نادر و معدود است.
واقعیت: فقط در سال ۲۰۰۲ میلادی ۔ ۱۳۸۱ تا ۱۳۸۲ – صد و پنجاه میلیون دختر و هفتاد و سه میلیون پسر در دنیا مورد انواع گوناگون آزار جنسی قرار گرفته اند.
باور: کودکان توسط غریبه ها مورد سوءاستفاده قرار می گیرند.
واقعیت: حدود هشتاد درصد سوءاستفاده کنندگان، برای کودکان و یا والدین آنها آشنا هستند.
باور: همه سوءاستفاده کنندگان مرد هستند.
واقعیت: اکثریت سوءاستفاده کنندگان مرد هستند اما تعداد گزارش شده زنان سوء استفاده کننده نیز رو به افزایش است.
باور: سوء استفاده کنندگان خشن، پرخاشگر، عقب مانده با بیمار روانی هستند و به راحتی قابل شناسایی می باشند. 
واقعیت: سوء استفاده کنندگان همیشه دارای ویژگی های ظاهری و قابل شناسایی مثل عقب ماندگان یا بیماران روانی نیستند. بسیاری از آنها توسط دوستان، همکاران و اعضای خانواده خود، « طبیعی » محسوب می شوند. شما لزوما نمی توانید از روی ظاهر فرد، یک آزاردهنده کودک را تشخیص دهید.
باور: کودکان اغلب در مورد آزار، داستان سرایی می کنند.
واقعیت: کمتر از دو درصد موارد کودک آزاری، داستان سازی کودکان بوده است.
باور: فقط دختران قربانی سوء استفاده جنسی هستند.
واقعیت: حدود شصت و سه درصد از قربانیان را دختران و سی و هفت درصد دیگر را پسران تشکیل می دهند. همچنین گزارشات نشان میدهد که موارد سوء استفاده جنسی از پسران رو به افزایش است.
باور: کودکان همیشه نسبت به آزار دهنده خود نگرش منفی دارند.
واقعیت: کودکان اغلب رابطه عاطفی با آزاردهنده خود دارند و می خواهند از سوء استفاده کننده حمایت کنند.
باور: کودکان معمولا سوء استفاده را فاش می کنند.
واقعیت: کودکان به ندرت سوءاستفاده را فاش می کنند.

چرا کودکان آزار و سوءاستفاده را افشا نمی کنند؟
کودکان معمولا از ابراز این که مورد سوءاستفاده جنسی قرار گرفته اند می ترسند. کودکان می ترسند چون بعضی وقتها شخص سوءاستفاده کننده آنها را تهدید کرده است، بعضی وقتها کودکان نگران عدم باور حرف خودشان هستند، بعضی وقتها نگران تأثیر حرفشان در سرنوشت خانواده می باشند و …
کودکان اغلب در مورد علت وقوع چنین رفتاری توسط یک بزرگسال گیج و آشفته هستند و نگران این که شاید آنها هم باید سرزنش شوند. کودکان بارها و بارها شنیده اند که والدین گفته اند « ما همه چیز را می دانیم سعی در پنهان کردن کاری نکن » یا « کلاغها برای ما خبر می آورند . کودکان کوچک تر غالبا فرض می کنند که والدینشان همه چیز را می دانند و اگر این کار بد بود حتما پدر و مادر آن را متوقف می کردند.
زمانی که فرد سوء استفاده کننده یکی از اعضای خانواده است کودکان از این نگران می شوند که اگر سوء استفاده فاش شود چه بلایی بر سر خانواده آنها خواهد آمد. در نتیجه این دلائل، سوءاستفاده جنسی غالبا برای مدتی به عنوان یک راز باقی می ماند. برخی از کودکان تا بزرگسالی نیز این راز را به خوبی مخفی نگه می دارند و برخی هرگز آن را فاش نمی سازند. البته دلائل دیگری نیز وجود دارد؛
از جمله:
_ ترس از تنبيه.
_ وابستگی به شخص آزاردهنده (از لحاظ مادی، عاطفی یا روانی).
_ احساس شرمندگی.
_ راز داری نسبت به فرد آزاردهنده (با رشوه یا تهدید).
_
تشخیص سوء استفاده جنسی

غالبا والدین با توجه به تغییر رفتار فرزند خود، اولین کسانی هستند که از سوءاستفاده جنسی کودکشان آگاه می شوند. تغییر رفتار در خانه یا مدرسه برای کودکی که مورد سوءاستفاده جنسی قرار گرفته است بسیار طبیعی است. کودکان معمولا در خانه افسرده و گوشه گیر می شوند و یا ممکن است که فوق العاده فعال و یا پرخاشگر شوند.  آنها ممکن است تغییرات قابل ملاحظه ای در خواب و خوراک یا در چگونگی رفتار و ارتباط با سایر افراد خانواده داشته باشند. کودکان غالبأ واپس روی رفتاری دارند یعنی بازگشت به رفتارهایی که معمولا در سنین پایین تر مشاهده می شوند (مثلا کودک ممکن است دوباره شروع به انگشت مکیدن کند). سایر علائم احتمالی در ادامه ذکر می شود:

نشانه های احتمالی سوءاستفاده جنسی
یک نشانه تنها، دلیل قاطعی بر سوءاستفاده از کودکان نیست. بسیاری از کودکان نشانه های چندگانه ای را به دلائل متفاوت و نه صرفا سوءاستفاده ظاهر می سازند. لازم به ذکر است که ممکن است بسیاری از علائم یک گروه سنی در سنین قبل و بعد هم دیده شوند مثلا برخی از علائمی که برای کودکان پیش دبستانی ذکر شده در سنین دبستان هم مشاهده شوند.
تقسیم بندی زیر فقط موارد خاص برگرفته از ویژگیهای سنی را تفکیک نموده است.
نوزادان تا حدود ۱۸ ماهگی
• مشکلات ادرار یا به طور کلی سر لگن نشستن.
• بیقراری.
• پارگی در اندام های تناسلی.
• رفتار بی تفاوت •
خونریزی، ترشح یا بو از ناحیه تناسلی
• ترس بی جهت ازبزرگسالان.
• ترس از ترک و رهاشدن.
• وابستگی یاعدم وابستگی افراطی .
• افت شدید منحنی رشد.
• گریه کردن افراطی.
• تغییر رفتار شدید.
• اختلال در خواب.

_ بازی های جنسی یا اسبابا بازی ها
_ روابط ضعیف با همسالان
_ پارگی در اندام تناسلی

محافظت کودکان از سوءاستفاده جنسی
به عنوان یک بزرگسال نسبت به فعالیت های کودک خود آگاه باشید. افزایش مهارتهای ارتباطی خود موجب برقراری ارتباط آگاهانه تر با کودک می شود و کمک می کند بتوانید مرز بین بازجویی و بی خیالی پیدا کنید و بتوانید همدلانه در مورد هر هدیه یا پولی که فرزنش شما به خانه می آورد سؤال کنید و مراقب تغییر رفتار کودک خود باشید.
با کودک خود در مورد هر رابطه صمیمانه ای که با بزرگترها دارد صحبت کنید. اگر کودک شما اوقاتی را با پرستار بچه با بزرگسال دیگری می گذراند در مورد فعالیتهایی که انجام داده اند صحبت کنید.
آموزش این نکته که بدن کودکان متعلق به آنهاست از اولین مفاهيم محافظت از کودکان است. همچنین به کودک تفاوت میان « لمس خوب » (مانند نوازش) و « لمس بد » (مانند کتک زدن یا لمس قسمتهای خصوصی بدن را بیاموزید.
